相信她在刚踏进Celebrity Big Brother（译名:名人版老大哥）的大门时也没想到几周后她的遭遇能引发了一场国际纷争，最后以英国人的自我反省而告终。她不仅赢了这届Big Brother,而且赢了全球人的心。
她的故事是从这里开始的：
希尔帕.谢蒂今年31，是印度的一名当红影星。她为了接触英国200多万南亚裔人并开拓自己在英国的影视业而参加了英国最有名的真人TV秀Celebrity Big Brother的比赛。
Celebrity Big Brother真人TV秀是从2000年起开播的，到今年已是第五季播出。此节目以庸俗搞笑、排斥角逐、名人参与的风格获取收视率，七年来稳定地保持着四百万观众，在当今英国电视节目中可谓少有，已成为第四频道(Channel 4)的收视保证。此真人TV秀每周二和周三晚上播出，片长一小时，出镜者每集不超过十二人。拿此集为例，除了谢蒂外，还有在该节目走红的英国喜剧演员Jade Goody（古迪）、前英国小姐Danielle Lloyd（劳德埃）、前S Club 7成员Jo O'Meara（奥马拉）、Michael Jackson的兄长Jermaine Jackson等，来自不同行业、出身和社会地位各异的人。这样的一组名人，在Big Brother House里要一起生活几周，同居一室，不许以任何方式与外界联系，没有电视电话电脑，与世隔绝。参加者每天24小时都在镜头的监视下，除了上厕所、入浴室和上床睡觉之外，录音mic头不许离身。他们的一举一动，一言一语都会在节目中播出，这个真人TV秀目的是要将名人真实的一面暴露无遗，让观众直接看到他们的真性情、真能力、真面目。但是朝夕相处并不意味着患难与共，因为游戏规则决定了人与人之间的竞争关系，谁能竭尽全力排斥他人，又能吸引电视观众的眼球最久，谁就是最后的胜利者。
在那里，由于种族文化背景的不同，谢蒂受到了其他英国本地参加者的种族歧视攻击：
她被同时参与该TV秀的古迪妈妈Jackiey Budden叫成"Indian（印度人）", 后又被古迪的男友Jack Tweed骂作"Paki（巴基妹）", 进而被前英国小姐Danielle Lloyd讥笑成 "the Indian desire to be white（她想变白人）"。古迪和男友Jack Tweed、前英国小姐Danielle Lloyd还有S Club 7前成员Jo O'Meara这四个英国本地参加者更搞小圈子，经常批评她和模仿嘲讽她的口音。这班人句句尖酸刻薄，令这位勇敢而坚强的印度女孩也无可奈何地发出"Is that what today's UK is? It's scary（这就是今天的英国吗？太可怕了！）" 的感叹。
周三晚播出的一集，Jade Goody竟当众辱骂Shilpa Shetty，叫她“滚回贫民窟去”。Shilpa Shetty身持正义，她向Big Brother投诉那是种族主义："I am representing my country（我是代表所有印度人）"， "I am fighting for dignity（我在维护自己的尊严）"。但对于这样的侮辱，过后她还是留下了委屈的眼泪。
I happened to watch that bit. I was shocked by Jade, and angry. I had never ever seen any one as disgusting as her in my life time till then. Shilpa won the battle. I think the public did the justice. Jade tried to won the sympathy from the public saying that she lost her baby some time ago, but who knows…Her behavior should never ever be tolerated. This country is lost, isn’t it? Especially the younger generation. So many kids hang around and do nothing but stupid things. I was out walking with an old people’s group (English people) some time ago. A group of kids kicked the football towards us, not just once. The ball hit an old man’s head, who is 80 years old. The kids didn’t say sorry and they picked up the ball and kicked the ball towards us again. I was very angry, and said to them, that they should apologize. They didn’t. Instead, they shouted at me: “Chinese, go home” The old people didn’t want to get into trouble, and persuaded me to walk away. But they followed us and laughed at us. I tried to talk to them but they thought it was more fun. The old people said it was better to leave them alone and they would lose interest soon. See? There are nobody to tell them what is right, and what is wrong. They have no moral values, they are going to grow up and be like Jade Goody. One of my friends is a teacher in England. It is hard work to teach the kids… Sorry, sounds like I am moaning, hehe. Just want to say, I like what you wrote.
